Creative Dance Congress

The Congress is an intensive program for experienced dancers dedicated to exploring the principles of individual and group dance improvisation developed by Barbara Mettler. Participants are exposed to a variety of teachers in sessions focused on free movement expression, developing the kinesthetic sense in individuals and building group awareness.

Introductory Mettler-based Dance Improvisation Workshop

Taught by Mary Andersen, the Introductory Mettler-based Dance Improvisation Workshop is open to participants with any level of experience and will cover basic materials and concepts in Mettler-based dance.  Those without Mettler-based experience are expected to attend the Introductory Workshop as preparation for the full Congress.

Mary Andersen has taught Mettler-based Creative Dance for over 30 years and studied with Barbara Mettler from 1981 through 1996.  She has led adult creative dance classes in Bennington, Vermont continuously for the past 16 years. Mary has applied this work with many populations and settings: nursery schools and Head Start programs, children’s dance centers, day care providers, faculty of the International School of Paris, French artists, and residents of assisted living and memory care facilities. In addition to her study with Mettler, Mary’s also has a dance background in modern dance (Bennington College), ballet, and Laban studies (Brighten University, England).
